Individual Therapy

Our Healing Philosophy:
At The Luminous Mind, we believe that therapy is a collaborative, corrective, and relational experience; one that empowers clients to better understand themselves and their place in the world. We treat every individual with respect and dignity, recognizing that clients are the experts of their own life experiences.
Our commitment is to provide care through a decolonized lens, which means that we are intentional about honoring each client’s identity, lived experience, and cultural context while understanding the impact of generational and ancestral experiences on the present.
Choosing a Provider
Our providers draw from a range of therapeutic approaches, which may include EMDR, Brainspotting, the Anchored Relational (formerly AIR Network) Model, Art Therapy, parenting support, couples therapy, child-focused modalities, and more. Services may be offered in English, Hindi, Arabic, Sindhi, Oromo, or Spanish.
Sessions can take place either in person or virtually, depending on your preference and your provider’s availability. The process typically begins with an intake session, lasting about an hour, where your provider will explore what brings you in and what you hope to gain from therapy. After that, weekly sessions are usually scheduled and run 50 to 55 minutes, tailored to your needs.
We deeply value your time and commitment. Your provider holds this space specifically for you, so please let us know in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule a session.

The process of finding the right therapist for you isn't always very straightforward. You can see from the staff profiles listed on our page that our providers come from many different backgrounds and with different training and areas of specialization. It is possible to make a request on the intake form, but this does not guarantee that you will be assigned to that provider as there are several factors that go into being assigned to a provider.

Factors that go into whether someone can work with a provider are:

-
Provider capacity (sometimes providers are not taking on new clients)
-
Lack of provider competence in treatment of specified area of concern
-
A dual relationship that you may or may not know about (this is a situation in which the provider you want to work with may be working or may have worked with someone that is close to you or the provider may themselves be someone in your social circle). Our codes of ethics caution against these types of situations and it is the provider's responsibility to be mindful of this. If this situation is happening you may or may not be told about it.
-
Insurance is sometimes prohibitive as sometimes the provider that you want to work with is not credentialed with your insurance plan. If this is the case you will be advised on the matter.

Not matter the reason why you are not matched with a provider that you ask to work with, we will work hard to help you obtain care from a provider that is a good fit for you whether within our team or by helping to find you care outside of The Luminous Mind if we do not have anyone available to meet your needs.

Waiting List
Because mental health providers see one client at a time for nearly an hour and usually on a weekly basis, it is not easy to "just stick you" into someone's schedule as they won't be able to ensure you a spot for the following week. As such, it is not uncommon that you will be on our waiting list until we ensure space for you with one of our providers. While you wait, please work on completing any necessary paperwork that is asked of you as sometimes there are spots that open up and they will go to client's who's documentations is ready to go.
